MAGPI's Network Upgrade Project

create a 100G compatible network for the region. At a cost of over $700,000, we will have replaced our electronics
and hardware with equipment that is ready to face the “Big Data” challenge that is expanding across all fields of study.
Compatible with new formats such as Software Defined Networking, the Juniper MX480 and the Ciena 6500s will provide our
members with new opportunities for fast and secure data transmissions in support of global research initiatives like
Bioinformatics, GENI, and the Large Hadron Collider.

Advanced Layer 2 Service (AL2S), delivers a strategic advantage for leaders in research and education (R&E) by providing effective and efficient wide area 100G Ethernet technology. AL2S allows users to create their own VLANs on the Internet2 AL2S backbone. Static or Dynamic, point-to-point or multipoint, intra-domain or inter-domain, AL2S puts control of the backbone VLANs into the users' hands for the creation of purpose-built private circuits using infrastructure already in place.
MAGPI’s upgrade from a Juniper M320 to a 100G capable MX480 will provide our members with the growth path needed for a constantly changing network environment. Optical Network Services
The MAGPI Regional Optical Network (RON) was created in 2008 through a joint venture of the Department of Energy, Department of Commerce, Princeton University, Internet2 and the University of Pennsylvania. The network when it was first installed provided 10G waves for MAGPI members who use the service. This upgrade, when completed later this summer, will provide a bajillion 100G waves between each of the node locations. MAPGI is one of 41 private, non-profit networks in the United States dedicated to the research and education community.
MAGPI procured a 20-year Indefeasible Right of Use (IRU) for dark fiber with access points in Philadelphia, Princeton and New York City. There are two distinct dark fiber segments; one between Philadelphia and Princeton, and one between Princeton and 32 Sixth Ave, (Formally the AT&T Long Lines facility) in New York City. Member participants share the operations and maintenance costs of the dark fiber. Participants must be MAGPI Members in order to use the dark fiber.
